Vocera is proud to support the National Taskforce for Humanity in Healthcare (NTH) as part of our efforts to advance the Quadruple Aim. The NTH is focused on accelerating an agenda that supports resilience, well-being, and joy in healthcare delivery. The Taskforce, comprised of doctors, nurses, healthcare leaders, and cross-industry allies is on a mission to understand, create and spread strategies that support human connection in all aspects of healthcare, empowering care team members to achieve their highest healing potential.
The Taskforce believes that to achieve its mission, the industry needs to follow three critical imperatives:
- Change the dialog around burnout from one that sees burnout as a personal psychological failing to acknowledgement of a system in distress. Through this reframing, shift the aim from burnout prevention to creation of a system that supports resilience, well-being, and joy.
- Adopt a metric for humanity that focuses less on deficit measurement (burnout), and more on understanding the causes and consequences of emotional thriving and emotional resilience.
- Create a blueprint for change that supports a systematic shift in culture towards a human-centered care system. Change must occur at all levels within organizations and cascade across all decisions related to people, processes, and technology.
Below, you can download the Taskforce’s initial position paper, presenting a business case for humanity in healthcare. In the paper, the NTH outlines the scope of burnout, as well as its financial, clinical, and human consequences. We also outline a new, comprehensive approach to supporting resilience and well-being among healthcare team members centered on a change model that starts with leadership, guiding leaders to create a culture that supports emotional thriving through human-centered leadership.
