Nurse Resilience Isn’t the Issue

Many nurse leaders I meet with are putting together “resilience kits” for nurses. A gift of items to help nurses take a moment for self-care is absolutely a thoughtful gesture. Yet it is not going to solve the real issue that’s causing burnout and the exodus of nurses from the profession.

My CNO report explains that a lack of resilience isn’t the issue; stressors in the work environment are the reason nurses have burnout. We need to look at the complexity of workflows and the dysfunction of the environment.
