The 2021 CNO Report

Protect the Nurse, Protect the Practice

Nurse Resilience Isn't the Issue

Many nurse leaders I meet with are putting together “resilience kits” for nurses. A gift of items to help nurses take a moment for self-care is absolutely a thoughtful gesture. Yet it is not going to solve the real issue that’s causing burnout and the exodus of nurses from the profession.

My CNO report explains that a lack of resilience isn’t the issue; stressors in the work environment are the reason nurses have burnout. We need to look at the complexity of workflows and the dysfunction of the environment.

The report lays out practical, tangible measures you can take to create a better environment for nurses through effective communication:

  • 1Minimize the stress of finding people, even in unfamiliar environments
  • 2Replace aloneness and isolation with connection
  • 3Let technology carry the burden of remembering
  • 4Provide a way to call for help in a moment of threat
  • 5And more…..
