By now you’ve probably seen the video of Dr. Deborah Cohan dancing with her OR staff at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco as she prepared for a double mastectomy. If you haven’t, we recommend you take a look:
Dr. Cohan is an OB/GYN and a patient. And from this video, we’re betting that she attacks her work and her life with zeal, style, and grace. We love how she gets the whole team engaged in her joy, and that she encourages her friends and family to help her create a “healing montage” of their own dance moves. Bravo, Dr. Cohan, and thank you.
We are privileged to work every day with healthcare professionals and patients who are bent on restoring the humanity to healthcare, much like Dr. Cohen. From the doctor who makes a practice of leaving his cell phone and pager outside the exam room so he can stay focused on the person in front of him. To the CEO who rounds with genuine interest in and empathy for her staff members. To the guest services professional who makes it his mission to provide as much comfort and support to the patients, families, and staff who come to his facility. And the patient who builds a community to support other patients like her, helping to influence the whole system from the bottom up. For all of you and more, we give thanks.
