As the Executive Director, RJ sets strategy and directs operations for the Network, working closely with members to make connections that accelerate innovation in the human experience at their organizations. RJ is an ardent patient advocate and, having spent most of his career in healthcare delivery, he knows firsthand the importance of fostering the well-being of staff, physicians, and volunteers. Before joining the Experience Innovation Network, RJ served as the Director of Patient Experience, first at Scripps Health and El Camino Hospital. In these roles his responsibilities included system strategy, performance improvement, and various operational responsibilities. Having success and appreciation for the effort it takes to achieve a meaningful ROI on healthcare outcomes, such as HCAHPS and Employee Wellbeing, RJ is motivated to work with teams to connect with the deeper purpose, stories, and relational aspects of healthcare.
RJ holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Master degrees in Public Health and Social Work from San Diego State University. He was raised in Washington, DC and has lived abroad in France, Spain, and Israel.
RJ enjoys hiking, surfing, cycling, and snowboarding, but most of his free time is enjoyed with his wife, two daughters, and their furry son Saffron (yellow-lab).
