Vocera Communications Increases Hospital Efficiency, Saving Approximately 6,000 Hours Per Year

Sydney (August 21, 2006) — Vocera Communications, provider of a wearable, voice-controlled instant communications device for the mobile workforce, today announced a solution implemented in Blacktown Hospital that improves productivity and patient care by enabling faster, direct communication between hospital staff.

Professor Steven Boyages, Chief Executive Sydney, West Area Health Service said without an effective means of communication, patient care and productivity can be negatively affected. “Faced with limited resources and patient increases in the emergency department at Blacktown Hospital, already servicing almost 90 patients per day, we decided to deploy the innovative Vocera system in order to improve overall staff efficiency,” he said.

The Vocera Communications System is comprised of two key elements: the Vocera System Software and the Vocera Communications Badge. The Vocera Communications Badge is a lightweight, wearable, voice-controlled device that enables instant, hands-free conversation. The Badge interfaces with the Vocera Server, where the system’s intelligence is housed. The system can also connect to the PABX in order to place and receive calls through the public telephone network. Together the Vocera System Software and Vocera Communications Badge allow users to instantly communicate with others throughout a building or campus environment.

While past methods of locating staff within Blacktown Hospital including mobile phones, pagers and physically searching were inefficient, the Vocera solution resulted in an estimated 6,000 hours per year in time savings for staff, leading to potential cost savings of more than $105,000 per year.

"Nurses and doctors found they were much more efficient in treating patients because they could more easily locate members of staff, increasing their productivity and boosting overall patient care and the flow of patients through the hospital,” said Professor Boyages.

Dr. Michael Hession, Director of Emergency Medicine, Blacktown Hospital said “Vocera has enabled us to improve service to our patients by harnessing wireless technology. Using Vocera we reduced each individual time lag, speeding up patient flow through the department and reducing staff frustration levels."
