Leading Maryland Hospital to Improve Patient Care With Vocera Communications System

Vocera Provides Hands-free Voice Communication Among Medical Personnel

CUPERTINO, Calif. (July 29, 2003) - To improve its hospital communications process with the goal to improve patient care and patient satisfaction, St. Agnes HealthCare in Baltimore, Md., has installed Vocera Communications System featuring a lightweight wearable badge that enables instant voice communications over a wireless network.

Up to 300 staff members across shifts are using the Vocera Communications Badges, devices that can be clipped to a shirt pocket or worn on a lanyard, that allow staff to speak to one another instantly over a wireless network. The system has been implemented in the medical unit.

By simply pressing a button on the badge and asking the system to call by name, title or function, hospital staff will instantly be connected to the resources or staff members they need, anywhere in the hospital’s wireless environment. The system will not only improve communication for the hospital staff but also enhance patient care, making it easier for healthcare personnel to reach and respond to their colleagues immediately.

“The system will be a real step-saver for our staff,” said Larry Lawson, St. Agnes HealthCare’s director of technical services. “Nurses are especially excited about the system because they will save time tracking down staff and resources and be able to spend more time with patients.”

The Vocera Communications System was chosen because previous communications tools, such as overhead paging and physically seeking staff, proved inefficient, noisy, and frustrating. The new system will allow staff to be in contact with colleagues instantly and to attend to patients more quickly than ever before.

“I am pleased that the staff will be able to contact a doctor about a patient’s condition without having to leave the patient’s bedside,” said St. Agnes HealthCare Nurse Manager, Kathi Diver. “Our nurses will be able to communicate more quickly with key healthcare providers and, as a result, care will flow more efficiently. The Vocera Communications System is going to significantly advance how we communicate and how we care for patients.”
