Vocera Communications Secures $8 Million in Fourth Round of Funding
CUPERTINO, Calif. (May 7, 2003) - Vocera Communications, Inc., a wireless voice communications company, today announced it has raised $8 million in its fourth round of funding. The round was led by Granite Global Ventures and included participation by all current investors, including Venrock Associates, RRE Ventures, Vanguard Ventures, and Avalon Ventures. The additional money will be used to fund operations as the company moves toward profitability.
“As customer installations continue to increase and mobile enterprises embrace the new communications experience, Vocera will be prepared to meet the growth in customer demand,” said Julie Shimer, CEO of Vocera Communications. “The additional funding will go toward increasing our market presence as we expand our customer base.”
Hany Nada, managing director at Granite Global Ventures, will be joining Vocera’s board of directors as a result of the financing. “Vocera Communications has demonstrated that it can meet its business objectives by building a strong sales-channel base and securing targeted customers in the healthcare, retail, and enterprise markets,” said Nada. “The company has successfully addressed a critical customer need with an innovative solution that significantly improves communications among mobile workers, thus increasing their productivity and efficiency.”
The Vocera Communications System combines the leading-edge technologies of 802.11b wireless LAN, Voice Over IP, and speech recognition to enable mobile workers within networked buildings or campuses to instantly connect and communicate with one another using simple voice commands.
The system consists of Vocera Server Software residing on a premise server and Vocera Communications Badges, which operate over a wireless LAN. The Badge, which weighs less than 2 ounces, can be clipped to a shirt pocket or collar or worn on a lanyard.
Since Vocera started shipping its product in October 2002, it has installed its system in leading hospitals, including Denver Health Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and other large enterprise environments, including a pilot within a Target Corporation retail store and the Orange County Public Library in Florida.
