London (September 21, 2006) — Vocera Communications has announced that its system installed as part of the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children’s (RBHSC’s) new wireless voice and data infrastructure has won the 2006 Communications News Editor's Award. The Vocera system also contributed to the RBHSC taking home the 2006 Communications News’ Best Wireless Project Award for innovative wireless deployment and the Outstanding Achievement Award given to the best nominee in any category.

The Communications in Business Awards celebrate business-enabling achievements throughout a wide range of public and private sector organisations. These Awards are designed specifically to recognise UK-based IT/networking/telecoms professionals who have demonstrated excellence in the implementation of a project/installation for their business.

The Vocera solution was installed within the RBHSC’s Barbour Ward to help improve patient care and staff satisfaction through simplifying the communication processes . Equipped with the Vocera Communications Badges and Vocera System Software, the ward’s seventy-five staff members were able to enjoy instant, hands-free voice communication. By simply pressing a button on the Badge and asking the system to call by name, title, or function, staff were instantly connected to the resources or colleagues they needed

Combining the leading-edge technologies of Wireless LAN (WiFi), Voice over IP (VoIP), and speech recognition, Vocera allows users to communicate, make decisions, and act quickly anytime, anywhere within a wireless environment.

The RBHSC has already been widely recognized in the industry for its use of cutting-edge wireless technologies winning the Best Enterprise Deployment for the public sector at the prestigious 2006 Wireless Broadband Innovation Awards and 2006 Public Sector Project of the Year at the Techworld Awards.

“We are delighted to see that by using the Vocera Communications System, hospitals such as Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children can enhance the treatment they provide to patients,” stated Nick Stone , UK Sales Manager for Vocera. “We feel extremely honoured to take home the Communications News Editor's Award.”

“The Communications News Best Wireless Project Award and the Outstanding Achievement Award given to the best nominee in any category are both extremely prestigious accolades to have won,” added Paul Duffy, IT Manager, Royal Hospitals. “Installing Vocera on our wireless LAN has definitely been one of the major factors in us gaining this recognition for the way we use wireless technologies.”
